Today I blogged, & by blogged, I of course mean endured countless humiliations, torments, & risings of bile.

i have a videogame in which the hero, his fat yet lovable friend, & his adopted sister – with whom he is in love – decide to leave their sleepy hamlet for the adventure of a lifetime. armed only with daggers, garbage-can lids, and a magical song, they venture through treacherous mountain passes to reach a cave believed to be the long-forgotten lair of a Dragon.

but before they leave the village forever, they spend a long and melancholy night upon a great cliff, standing amongst the graves of long-dead heroes. they look at the land spread out below them – quilted swaths of green farmland, veiny little rivers darting through, great & distant snowy peaks, and the moon, vast and alone in a pure, perfectly silent sky. they think about how they are leaving behind everything they know & love, forever. they know that they must not return until a terrible & mysterious change has taken place within them. and they know also that when they have adventured long & hard enough for this terrible & mysterious change to come and enfold them, there will no longer be a home for them to return to.

the next morning they gather up their meager provisions. the stocky sidekick stocks many sandwiches. they say goodbye to their parents. they say goodbye to their flying cat. they buy several herbs for healing baboon attacks. they approach the last safe, well-scouted acre of village land. they are only level 1. a horrible loneliness seizes them. the world is big, and there is no map. but all upon it, dark & distant places, busy with the secret lives of unknown men, wait for them. they are not afraid.
